<image:title>Blog - Reflecting on my first month as an au pair - However, when my host mom showed me my room and subsequently the terrace, I remember being in awe at how big the city was. From their penthouse, we can see both the mountains and the sea, and an amazing view of La Sagrada Familia. I knew Barcelona was a big, cultural epicentre, but didn’t realize just how big the city is until that moment.</image:title>

<image:title>The Netherlands - Coffee Diaries: The Netherlands - Bartine Bakery & Market</image:title>
<image:caption>Situated on a quaint street away from the city centre and lined with local shops, this coffee shop and bakery was one of my favorite stops on this trip. While not in my initial plans, I missed out on the opportunity to visit Friedhats Fuku Cafe in Amsterdam and decided to stop here to try the Amsterdam-roasted beans. The coffee was great but the pastry… the pastry was amazing.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Netherlands - Coffee Diaries: The Netherlands - ROAST</image:title>
<image:caption>After a morning spent walking to Delfshaven (only to discover that it must’ve been way too early because everything was closed) I decided to make the most of my time in a different neighborhood in Rotterdam. I stopped by ROAST to enjoy a cortado and read a book along the seat-lined street. Not an extraordinary cup of coffee, per se, but definitely not unenjoyable. Baristas were very friendly, the ambiance was great, and the location as well!</image:caption>

<image:title>The Netherlands - Coffee Diaries: The Netherlands - kohi koffiebar</image:title>
<image:caption>My last stop before leaving for The Hague brought me to a more residential part of Haarlem. Kohi koffiebar featured a minimalistic design and approach to coffee as well. With a simple menu and one barista taking the time to craft each drink, it felt like a very personalized experience. While it is a little out of the way, it was a pleasant experience if you want to enjoy a cup of coffee in a quiet cafe and neighborhood.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Netherlands - Coffee Diaries: The Netherlands - SAINT-JEAN Bakery</image:title>
<image:caption>I found SAINT-JEAN Bakery through a YouTube vlog and was so surprised at how good the coffee was. Actually, this might have been my favourite coffee/pastry experience in The Netherlands. I ordered an americano and chocolate-hazelnut babka which, other than being huge was also so delicious.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Netherlands - Coffee Diaries: The Netherlands - Screaming Beans</image:title>
<image:caption>I hadn’t initially planned on going to Screaming Beans - by that I mean it wasn’t listed on my coffee ‘bucket list.’ I visited the Runstraat location, in part to charge my phone and in part because I was cold and, naturally, that meant it was time for coffee. The coffee shop was small and quaint, and absolutely packed, both inside and out; usually a telltale sign that something good is happening inside.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Netherlands - Coffee Diaries: The Netherlands - The Village Coffee & Music</image:title>
<image:caption>I abandoned my plans to walk to a few coffee shops about 20 minutes out of the city centre because it was pouring rain. Instead, I opted to head into The Village, a coffee shop I had passed numerous times on my way to and from my hostel in Utrecht. The coffee was great and their selection of pastries as well. I had the banana bread (which can usually be either really good or really bad, in my opinion).</image:caption>

<image:title>The Netherlands - Coffee Diaries: The Netherlands - Wakuli specialty coffee bar</image:title>
<image:caption>With a growing amount of locations in Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Nijmegen, you’re bound to stumble upon a Wakuli if spending time in one of The Netherlands’ major cities. I visited the Vijzelgracht location in Amsterdam (and Nobelstraat in Utrecht) as my first stop.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Netherlands - Coffee Diaries: The Netherlands - Coffee Habits</image:title>
<image:caption>This Smedestraat location wasn’t on my list - though their larger location on Kleine Houtstraat was. I passed by this small and cozy shop while walking from the train station to my hostel and after dropping my bags, immediately returned to sit and enjoy a filter coffee. Though I never made it to the bigger shop, I’m so happy I ended up going to this smaller location. The location seats about 3 or 4, and the barista was super kind and knowledgeable.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Netherlands - Coffee Diaries: The Netherlands - Man Met Bril Koffie</image:title>
<image:caption>One of my favorite - if not my favorite - coffee experience in the Netherlands. The filter options at Man Met Bril Koffie were super interesting, and I enjoyed it so much the first time that I went back again the next day. I ordered the breakfast special (both times) which comes with a really generous assortment of eggs, toast, pastries, and jams, as well as the filter coffee of the day.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Netherlands - Coffee Diaries: The Netherlands - Mica Coffee Bar</image:title>
<image:caption>I was looking for a place to sit and read. My initial plan was to head over to the larger Coffee Habits location but it was absolutely packed. I walked past Mica Coffee Bar and was drawn to the decor, so I opted to go here instead. A vegan cafe, all milk-based drinks are served with alternative milks. I had a cortado, which was really nice and enjoyed the calm environment to relax and unwind during a quiet afternoon in Haarlem.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Netherlands - Coffee Diaries: The Netherlands - Blackbird</image:title>
<image:caption>Blackbird caught my eye as it is a small hole-in-the-wall coffee “shop”. Quite literally, as you order through a window, behind which there is just enough room for the barista. A few small stools and benches are placed outside, overlooking the canal for customers to sit and enjoy. The coffee here was amazing and the service as well. I thoroughly enjoyed Blackbird and would recommend it to anyone visiting Utrecht.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Excerpts from Barcelona - 15 - 16 - 17 - Morreig</image:title>
<image:caption>Morreig has been my favourite pastry experience in Barcelona, by far. I got the mascarpone espresso pastry and a cortado and wow. The coffee was just fine, I probably wouldn’t order it again, but the pastry was incredible. Espresso-flavoured, mascarpone cream between layers of flakey pastry dough and topped with a crunchy espresso crumble. They also serve ice cream, so I guess I’ll have to go back to try it!</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Excerpts from Barcelona - 14 - La Sagrada Familia</image:title>
<image:caption>I visited La Sagrada Familia with a guided tour, as well as the tour/climb of the Nativity tower. Wow. What an experience. I learned so much about the history of the basilica and the meaning behind certain stylistic and architectural decisions. Every single choice has a purpose and every measurement and calculation as well. The visit was incredibly fascinating and I would do it again, anytime.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Excerpts from Barcelona - 13 - Girona!!!</image:title>
<image:caption>Many people told me that Girona was a beautiful city but I underestimated (or maybe they simply didn’t love it as much as I do) just how beautiful. Dare I say… I like it more than Barcelona? The city has a lot of history, ruins, great coffee shops, and is so close to the mountains. I explored the murals of Girona, the old town, and the Cathedral.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Excerpts from Barcelona - 11 - Cursa El Corte Inglés</image:title>
<image:caption>This race really surprised me! First off, a turnout of approximately 45 thousand people is insane. Second of all, the level of organization for a race that was entirely free is super impressive to me. The music, the crowds, the cheering! And, of course, the fact that I set a pretty nice PB made it a very memorable day.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Excerpts from Barcelona - 11 - The weekend started off with a spontaneous meetup in Ciutat Vella at Cala del Vermut. Funny enough, I had just been thinking that I should probably try vermouth in Spain, seeing as it is everywhere, and this tapas bar ended up being the closest-slash-highest-rated place! And, of course, some croquetas de pollo to accompany our drinks!</image:title>

<image:title>Spain - Excerpts from Barcelona - 10 - Trail running in Vallvidrera</image:title>
<image:caption>I went for my longest trail run this week - 16 km! It was wet, and rainy, and muddy, and HARD but it was so much fun. The route started off on my usual Carretera de les Aigües and up to Tibidabo before heading into some more technical terrain. Despite being challenging it was also relaxing and I can’t wait for more runs like this!</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Excerpts from Barcelona - 10 - Saturday also consisted of another great run. I joined the RCB Social Run, starting off in El Born and then making our way to the beach and back. The weather was incredible, making it super enjoyable! I think I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again. The running scene in Barcelona is on another level. It feels like everyone in the city is a runner and the energy they bring makes it feel like you’re at a party.</image:title>

<image:title>Spain - Coffee Diaries: Barcelona - 02 - Cafés Él Magnifico</image:title>
<image:caption>I LOVED it here. First off, the inside of Cafés Él Magnifico was super cool and the staff were incredibly nice. I got a cortado with the Blend Virtuoso, and it is one of the best coffees I’ve had in Barcelona, so far. Perfect, texture, well-balanced, slightly sweet but still rich from the chocolatey/cocoa flavor.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Coffee Diaries: Barcelona - 02 - Sitio</image:title>
<image:caption>Situated in Gràcia, Sitio is a labour of love. Part coffee shop, part artists’ workshop, you can just tell that the owners are passionate about what they do. The concept is super, the coffee was good, and the people working there (I’m assuming owners) were so friendly and took the time to explain their whole idea to me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Coffee Diaries: Barcelona - 02 - ONIS COFFEE</image:title>
<image:caption>This shop had been on my list and I happened to pass by it one day, so I went in even though I hadn’t planned to. I’m so happy I did. ONIS has been one of my favourite cafe experiences. The staff were great, the ambiance was calm, and the pastry was to die for. I had a cortado with Three Marks Santa Clara, a Brazilian coffee.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Coffee Diaries: Barcelona - 02 - Yako Coffee Bar</image:title>
<image:caption>I ended up stopping at Yako Coffee Bar because it was in the square where I ended my morning run one day and, naturally, I’m always interested in the idea of a post-run sweet treat. I had a cortado with a Colombian coffee from Nomad and a slice of banana bread. Both were excellent and the staff were very friendly.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Coffee Diaries: Barcelona - 02 - CHROMATIC Cafe</image:title>
<image:caption>CHROMATIC Café is hidden in the residential streets of Gràcia. The interior is super welcoming and cozy, and the barista was SO friendly. This may have been one of my best employee/customer interactions since being in Barcelona. I had a cortado with Three Marks Santa Clara, Brazil, which further pushed me to visit Three Marks.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Coffee Diaries: Barcelona - 02 - Three Marks Coffee</image:title>
<image:caption>After trying Three Marks at many cafes around the city, I thought it was finally time I make it to their actual location. Situated in l’Eixample, they have a outdoor seating (!!!) and indoor seating. I had a cortado made with Daye Bensa, an Ethiopian coffee. It was smooth, rich, and well-balanced… and I enjoyed every second of it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Coffee Diaries: Barcelona - 02 - sin amor, no | morning bar</image:title>
<image:caption>Sin amor, no | morning bar had been on my list, so I was super happy to pass by it, post-run one day. I had a cortado with Toma, a Madrid-based coffee roaster. However, I don’t know which beans exactly. I didn’t ask for the name because, to be honest, the employee working the bar was very attitude-y, and it threw me off.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Coffee Diaries: Barcelona - 02 - Super Onda</image:title>
<image:caption>Super Onda is another one of the coffee shops that motivated me to visit Three Marks. I had a cortado with Daye Bensa and, having already tasted this espresso before, I was actually kind of disappointed in this experience. The texture of my cortado wasn’t great (as you can see in the picture) and it also tasted under-extracted.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Surprise, surprise! Another cafe favourite. This week, I visited Taulat 44 in El Poblenou and had a great experience. I had a cortado made with Nomad coffee and a vegan banana bread. All I have to say is… I didn’t know vegan banana bread could taste so good. It might just be one of the best banana breads I’ve ever eaten.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Excerpts from Barcelona - 08 - I got the “day off” on Monday, since it was Easter and both the girls’ parents were home, so I finally made my way to Hidden Coffee Roasters, at their Les Corts location. <image:title>Spain - Excerpts from Barcelona - 08 - Experiencing Sant Jordi</image:title>
<image:caption>Sant Jordi, or Saint George’s Day, is super widely celebrated in Barcelona and I’m so happy I got to experience it. Traditionally, men offer women roses and, in return, women offer them a book. Nowadays, everyone offers roses to whomever they’d like, as a symbol of love, friendship, appreciation, you name it. You can’t take more than 5 steps without seeing a little stand (like the one in the photo) selling roses.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nook Coffee in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi is a cozy space with indoor seats, a quaint vibe, and super friendly staff! Having visited this cafe in my first week in Barcelona, my nerves took over and I don’t believe I asked any information about the coffee. That said, I remember enjoying my cortado and thinking that I would return!</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Coffee Diaries: Barcelona - 01 - Slowmov</image:title>
<image:caption>SlowMov is the first third wave coffee shop I visited in Barcelona and I was not disappointed. Located in Gràcia, the cafe has a great atmosphere, very knowledgeable staff, and most importantly, great coffee. I had a cortado which I remember being really nice, but in all honesty I don’t remember what the beans where. Having ordered in Spanish, I was more nervous about being grammatically correct and don’t even know if I ended up asking what was being used for my drink!</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Coffee Diaries: Barcelona - 01 - Nomad Coffee Bar</image:title>
<image:caption>Situated in Ciutat Vella, Nomad Coffee Bar has been my favourite coffee experience in Barcelona, so far. Their selection of beans rotates, and you pay based on the origin rather than the beverage. I asked for the barista’s suggestion for a cortado and ending up having their Ethiopia Tomas Ganamo. It had notes of apricot, blueberry, and raw cacao, was perfectly balanced and subtly fruity.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Coffee Diaries: Barcelona - 01 - GoodNews Cafe</image:title>
<image:caption>With multiple locations around the city, you’re bound to stumble across a GoodNews Coffee stand/kiosk or shop during your time in Barcelona. The good news is (pun intended) that for a chain, their coffee is actually quite decent. The service was not the most personalized, and it’s not where I’ll go to chat about roasting and sourcing, but if it is the closest thing, or happens to be the only thing open–most things are closed on Sunday in Barcelona-it is by no means a bad option.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Coffee Diaries: Barcelona - 01 - Right Side Coffee Bar</image:title>
<image:caption>Right Side Coffee Bar is hidden in the narrow cobblestone streets of the Gothic Quarter. It’s a beautiful space with a great ambiance, knowledgeable staff, and really good espresso. I didn’t have the chance to chat much with the staff as I visited on the weekend and the cafe was incredibly busy; there weren’t any seats available when I visited. I can’t wait to go back, ask some questions, and try a pour-over.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Coffee Diaries: Barcelona - 01 - Anís Cafe</image:title>
<image:caption>Located in Barceloneta, Anís cafe is a warm and comforting environment. The decor, music, and overall warm glow of the cafe make it a nice escape from the business of the neighbourhood. I had a cortado, made with SlowMov coffee. It was balanced in flavour and complemented the subtle sweetness of the cheesecake really well. This is definitely a great spot to sit, unwind, or meet up with friends.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Coffee Diaries: Barcelona - 01 - Niwa Cafeteria</image:title>
<image:caption>Though I didn’t have a coffee at Niwa, I felt it was necessary to include it in this post because of my overall (amazing) experience. For one, the matcha was incredible: not bitter, slightly sweet, subtly herby, and with a nice aftertaste. The black sesame pound cake was the star of the show. From the texture of the cake itself to the lightly savoury and roasted taste of the glaze, it was everything I want from a pastry. I can’t wait to go back and try something from their coffee menu.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Coffee Diaries: Barcelona - 01 - Café Cometa</image:title>
<image:caption>My first filter coffee in Barcelona! As per usual, I was going to get a cortado but I changed my mind after seeing the pink MoccaMaster behind the counter. Since I’ve been looking to purchase one for home use and have never tasted coffee brewed with it before, I was curious to taste and see what it would be like. They served coffee from Cafés Él Magnifico and as expected (I had only heard good things about them) it was a wonderful fruity coffee but still had good body. This little taste made me very eager to visit the roasters’ location in Ciutat Vella.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nomad Coffee Bar (Passatge Sert) was an incredible experience. I attended on a Sunday afternoon, since it was free as of 3:00 p.m., however, I do recommend booking a ticket in advance on the website. I was recommended the Za’atar and whipped feta pastry by the employee working that day and wow. Tangy yet nutty, topped with sage and a hint of a slight sweetness - maybe honey? Definitely one of the best savoury pastries I’ve tasted. Plus, all that while a trio jammed out on the flute, saxophone, and clarinet in the square. What more can I ask for?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Last week I ran up to Passeig de les Aigües and was mesmerized by the incredible view over Barcelona. This week, I wanted to go a little further away on the trail, and I’m so glad I did. The 400+m up to Tibidabo was part trail, gravel, and road. Hard, of course, since I’m used to running with no elevation gain. The view along the way was incredible and the church at the top, Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor, was beautiful. The trail can also be hiked or you can take the funicular to Tibidabo.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I passed by the window of this Catalan bakery and couldn’t resist going in after seeing the Ensaïmada de crema in the window display. An ensaïmada is a pastry consisting of dough made with reduced pork lard, or “saïm” in Catalan, which is where the pastry’s name derives from. I got the cream one, which was filled with a delicious egg-based cream. It is at once rich in flavor, yet light and fluffy; the unique, pillowy texture was delicious. I’ll definitely be visiting again to try more of their selection.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spain - Excerpts from Barcelona - 01 - Morning run to Carretera de les Aïgues</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s been raining since I arrived, so I took the first chance that I got to go out for a run in the sun and explore my neighbourhood. I ran up to Carretera de les Aïgues - though, I didn’t use the trail, the run up to the trailhead was really nice. On the way back, I stopped by Casa Vicens Gaudi and admired the architecture of Gràcia and Sarrià-Sant Gervasi.</image:caption>
